9 Healthy Ways to Sweeten Your Coffee Without Sugar?

It is not a secret thing that the sugar in our coffee is not so good for our health. It consist too much calories and too much sugar consumption can lead to development of cavities and increase weight. You can use artificial sweeteners as a substitute of sugar but they are produced from disputed chemicals, which have no nutritional benefits.

However, if you use natural sweeteners such as maple syrup or honey, you can get the desired sweetness and some wonderful health benefits too. Let us have a look below at the sweeteners we can use instead of sugar in our coffee.

Honey

We usually think that every teaspoon of honey contains more calories compared to sugar but according to World Shift International, it can help you to lose weight. Honey is less likely than sugar to cause fall in blood sugar and rapid spikes, which are responsible for increasing appetite.

Honey also has a number of minerals and vitamins such as potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium, sulphur, iodine, zinc, copper, phosphate, vitamin A, C and various B vitamins.

Do you know, honey is an anti-bacterial ingredient and antioxidant too? Honey also helps to control diseases like diarrhoea, stomach ulcers, indigestion etc. you can start by adding one teaspoon of honey to your coffee and stir until it is blended. Then test for sweetness and add more if required.

Maple syrup

The researchers of the University of Rhode Island said that pure maple syrup consists phenolic, which the same antioxidant mixture found in berries. This syrup also has 13 other antioxidants. 8 of them are only present in maple syrup. These mixtures have anti-cancer, anti-diabetic and anti-bacterial features.

However, if you want to enjoy these benefits fully, you have to use pure maple syrup because the artificial ones do not contain as much health benefits. You can start first by putting a teaspoon of syrup in your coffee. This will sweeten your coffee naturally and provide you a unique maple flavour.

Try sweetening with stevia

Stevia is a natural sweetener without any calories and it was extracted from a South American plant named Stevia. This is 300 times sweeter than sugar. However, this sweetness has no effect on your blood sugar level, which prevents diabetes.

A research in 2000 suggests that if stevia is used regularly, it can benefit people with high blood pressure, by reducing both diastolic and systolic blood pressure. According to the Life Extension Magazine, stevia is also called as anti-inflammatory, anti-microbe, anti-tumor and anti-diarrheal.

As stevia is very sweet, you need a very small amount in your coffee, add half-teaspoon to your coffee and then adjust if needed.

Use molasses

Molasses is a byproduct of sugar production and it also has antioxidant features. When it is compared to other sweeteners like corn syrup, refined sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup, honey etc., blackstrap and dark molasses contains the highest level of antioxidants. However, it has a spicy, strong flavour that may change the scent of your coffee, so you may take some time to get used to it.

Use xylitol

Xylitol loved by all. It is a natural sweetener, which is extracted from corn stalks or birch trees. It depends upon the brand you choose to buy. It has only 1/3 the calories of sugar and has a lower glycemic index. You can start using 1-for-1 and then use it regularly as a substitute of normal sugar.

A kind of Xylitol is prepared from non-GMO corn stalks but it is much more expensive than sugar and hard to find. However, xylitol made from birch trees are affordable and easy to find. If you are addicted to very sweet coffee, this is an ideal element for sweetening your coffee.

Note one thing, xylitol is harmful for dogs. So use this carefully if you have one furry friend.

Add cinnamon to coffee grounds

You can add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon in 4 tablespoons of coffee grounds before brewing your caffeine in your best drip coffee maker. This will provide you flavoured hot coffee without sweetening it. It tastes wonderful and this may be a reason for you to abandon sugar.

Use coconut cream

I was desperately looking for a sweetener alternative to sugar for the last few days. Suddenly an idea came in my brain and I applied it immediately. I decided to use coconut cream in my cinnamon spiked coffee and the taste of the drink was heavenly.

A touch of sweetness added by the coconut milk and the cinnamon added a wonderful flavour. These two combinations can make a fantastic cup of hot coffee. If you want more sweetness, you can use stevia or xylitol too.

Dates

Dates are obviously one of my favourite sweeteners. You can use the date paste to sweeten your coffee too. Are you wondering how to make a date paste? Then read the procedure to make one.

Cover two cups of pitted dates under a bowl of water. Let them soak for an hour then drain the dates and store the soaked liquid. Then blend the dates and add the liquid, one tablespoon at a time until a smooth paste is ready.

Now the date paste is ready and you can stir this in your coffee cup to sweeten it. You will also gain many health benefits from it as there are iron, fiber, magnesium, calcium and vitamin B-6 too!

Use non-dairy milk

Nondairy milk is one of the best things, which may add to your coffee instead of cow’s milk. It has no palm oil and cane syrup. Therefore, it can help you improve your blood sugar and reduce addictions to sugar.

This type of milk consists double calcium than normal milk; it is naturally oil free and provides you Vitamin B12 too! This milk will help to reduce the bitterness of your coffee so you will not require sugar any more to sweeten cup of coffee.
