The Delonghi Dolce Gusto Eclipse is a beautifully designed, touch-activated multi-beverage machine that can prepare an impressive array of hot and cold drinks in a variety of sizes.

Delongi Eclipse in my kitchen…

While it would probably be simpler to refer to the Delonghi Dolce Gusto Eclipse as a “coffee capsule machine“, that really wouldn’t be doing it justice – this machine can produce everything from long black Americanos and latte macchiatos to chai tea lattes and hot chocolate.

All you have to do is pop in the Delonghi Eclipse Dolce Gusto pod of your choice (you can choose from over 30 different varieties of drinks), and the machine will whip up your desired beverage in what seems like no time flat.

The elegant, ultra-modern design of this machine gives it a look that resembles a piece of modern sculpture, making it just as much a decorative element in your home as a functional machine for beverage production.

When not in use, the machine maintains a ring-like shape, but when switched on, it basically “unfolds itself” automatically into the beverage preparation position. From there, you use the intuitive touch-screen interface to select your desired settings, and then it’s off to the races.

With an impressive 15 bars of pump pressure, you can be assured that this machine will provide the maximum amount of flavour extraction to create coffee shop style drinks that can rival that of any high street shop.

How easy is it to use?

This was one of the main concerns that I had when I first started researching the Delonghi Dolce Gusto Eclipse – yeah, it looks fantastic, but how easy is it to use?

With many coffee machine brands, there seems to be a correlation between the “fanciness” of the machine’s design and a lack of user-friendliness, but I’m happy to report that Delonghi has successfully managed to avoid this all-too-common mistake.

Not only is the Delonghi Eclipse a veritable work of art, but it is refreshingly easy to operate as well. After you switch it on and allow it to assume the preparation position, all you have to do is adjust the drip tray according to your desired cup size, insert your preferred capsule into the capsule holder, select the appropriate volume according to what is recommended on the capsule, and then touch the hot water (or cold water depending upon the beverage) icon to begin preparing the beverage.

If you’re working with an extra big cup, you can choose the XL beverage setting to accommodate larger-sized drinks. Once the beverage has been prepared, all you have to do is remove the cup from the drip tray and then remove the used capsule from the holder. It really doesn’t get much simpler than that!

The simplicity and ease of use that the Delonghi Eclipse affords is one of the main reasons why this machine stands out among its competitors.

What accessories are included?

The Delonghi Dolce Gusto is very much a self-contained unit, and that is primarily due to its clever and elegant design. All you need are the pods and some water, and this machine is ready to use as soon as it arrives at your doorstep!

Cons

  • The water tank is a little small for my taste, but that’s not a make-or-break for me. I can live with it.
  • I’m not sure why the designers chose to pair a red cable with this sleek silver-and-black machine, but hey, you can’t win ’em all.

Anything else you should know?

I think it’s important to note that this machine is highly energy-efficient, as it features an automatic shut-off function that kicks in after 5 minutes of inactivity. In addition, the Delonghi Eclipse requires virtually zero maintenance (except a descaling every 3 to 4 months or 900 uses), and since it features wipe-down surfaces, you won’t have to fuss with any major cleaning jobs to keep the machine looking good.

Conclusion

At the risk of sounding a little biased, I must say that I am duly impressed with the Delonghi Dolce Gusto Eclipse. Not only does it look great, but it performs about as well as you could ask for from a top-quality multi-beverage machine.
