Summary

The Lavazza Espria Plus excels at what it was engineered to do. And that’s produce barista-style espresso, lungo, and Americano with as much consistency as the control panel can afford. Definitely a good investment for the regular capsule coffee drinkers out there.

If we’re talking about variety, convenience, and the simplest cup of coffee you ever made in your life, then nothing beats today’s range of coffee capsule machines. I’ve seen and used almost all the top brands out there, that’s why I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Lavazza’s newest unit.

Now, Lavazza makes good coffee; there’s no question about it. But just how well does this compact unit perform? Promising one-touch controls and a cleaner, faster way to make barista-style coffee, here’s my take on the Lavazza A Modo Mio ESPRIA plus coffee capsule machine.

Lavazza Espria Plus review

What I like

  • Small and compact design
  • Premium, metallic finish
  • Reliable brand
  • Wide range of capsules

What I don’t like

  • Power cable is a little short
  • No multi-cup pour

What are you buying?

If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a lifelong coffee connoisseur, it’s that you have to know your brand to know their products. Lavazza is a well known Italian coffee maker that excels in the area of coffee bean production with nationwide shelves in all supermarkets to prove it. From the laid-back beverage drinker to the hardcore coffee lover, this brand likely has a machine for you.

Lavazza A Modo Mio ESPRIA Plus Review

ESPRIA Plus in my kitchen…

Translated to ‘My Way’ in English, the A Modo Mia coffee machine from Lavazza is a simple, compact and elegant countertop machine built from the brand’s famous Espria line. Measuring a measly 15 by 33 by 39cm with a total weight of 4.5 Kg, this machine is as compact as they come.

The premium metallic silver grey exterior immediately identifies the Espria plus with its sophisticated and modern look. But aside from the elegant design, Lavazza included some pretty advanced technology on this one.

As opposed to using filtered coffee or ground beans, the Lavazza A Modo Mio plus keeps things clean and simple with advanced, one touch controls. But what really grabbed my fancy was the inclusion of a second programmable button that’s a real life-saver.

See, the previous Espria models had just one button which meant absolutely zero guidance for your espresso, lungo, or even Americano for that matter. But with the Espria Plus, making your coffee is that much easier.

Likewise, this coffee machine makes use of a 15-bar pressure pump to get that barista-style coffee. The ESPRIA plus is compatible with A Modo Mio coffee capsules which range from 24p per capsule.

  • Type: Capsules
  • Material: Plastic with metallic finish
  • Ground coffee: No
  • Coffee beans: No
  • Capsules: Yes
  • ESE pods: No
  • Size: 33.4 cm x 15.2 cm x 39.4 cm
  • Weight: 4.5kg
  • Water capacity: 0.8l

How easy is it to use?

As you would expect from most coffee capsule machines, the Lavazza A Modo Mio ESPRIA plus is as user-friendly as they come. Its entire design is centred on making things as clean, convenient and straightforward as possible.

The unit includes a slot at the top where you just yank back the handle to open it, slide in your capsule, then pull back the handle to close it before pressing the water release button. I have to admit; it’s quite the satisfying motion.

Once locked in, you should first make sure that there’s water in the tank. The Espria Plus incorporates a 0.8-litre water tank at the back which can be detached for easy cleaning and refilling. Thanks to the 15 bar pressure pump, you get a great cup of coffee with notably good crema at the top.

I also found the spout and drip tray sizable and versatile enough to place under your coffee mug without much fuss. But I have to say; Lavazza could have done much better on the power button placement. Being extremely low and on the side, you’ll have to ensure there’s extra room around the unit or you could get some accidental starts.

What accessories are included?

Once you’ve made your purchase, you should expect the following items in the box:

  • The Lavazza A Modo Mio ESPRIA plus

Key features of Lavazza Espria Plus

Pros

  • Small and compact design is ideal for smaller kitchens
  • Premium, metallic finish adds an aesthetical touch
  • A Modo Mia coffee capsules offer a wide range of flavours

Cons

  • No multi-cup pour and milk-frothing options

Anything else you should know?

If you’re like me, then you obviously care a lot about the temperature of your morning cup of coffee. Now, I can forgive the fact that I have to wait for 40 seconds before my coffee can get hot enough. But once that coffee hits your cup, you better be quick to drink it all up because that cooling rate is unbelievable. Don’t get me wrong guys; the end results are piping hot – just not hot enough to let it sit around.

Conclusion

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again; Lavazza can really make a great cup of coffee. True to their name A Modo Mia (My Way), their broad range of coffee machines and even wider array of capsule flavours is quite impressive. However, the Lavazza A Modo Mio ESPRIA plus is an entry-level coffee machine and it shows. Aside from the fact that there’s no milk frothing option, you can also say goodbye to making two cups of coffee at a time.

However, the Espria Plus excels at what it was engineered to do. And that’s produce barista-style espresso, lungo, and Americano with as much consistency as the control panel can afford. Perhaps it’s the basic features and simplicity in design that makes the Espria Plus so affordable. The coffee machine is also easy to use, and you can rely on the stainless steel drainage and metallic housing to serve you for years to come. Definitely a good investment for the regular capsule coffee drinkers out there.
